But again the shading CURSES. I can't make mine work - it just looks like they have a really bad birthmark all over

Well, I put the scanned pic into PS Elements and traced the sketch with my tablet. Then laid in flat colors.
The shading was done in another layer on top of the raw color, basically I just scribble black where I sorta think shadows should be and then pull the opacity of the black layer down to about 25% or something. It's kind of a cheap way to shade, but I'm just learning
I should have put in highlights, now that I think about it >.>
And I'm sure your shadows aren't as bad as you think
